Rail from China to Central Asia: how the route actually works

The rail route between China and Central Asia looks simple on a map and is anything but simple to execute. Between loading a container at the Xi'an terminal and unloading it at a Tashkent warehouse there are at least four hand-offs of responsibility, two customs procedures and one physical transfer onto a different gauge. Here is what happens at each stage — and where the days usually disappear.
A block train departs on schedule, not when the cargo happens to be ready. That is the key difference from trucking: if your consignment reaches the terminal a day late, the next window is a week away. So the real transit time must be counted from the next train date, not from the date the goods are ready at the factory.
China runs on 1435 mm gauge; the former Soviet states on 1520 mm. At the Dostyk/Alashankou and Altynkol/Khorgos crossings, containers are physically lifted from Chinese flatcars onto Kazakh ones. Normally this takes 1–3 days; in peak season up to a week. It is the least predictable stretch of the whole route.
After transhipment the train runs across the Kazakh network to the destination station. In Uzbekistan that is usually Sergeli or Chukursay; in Kazakhstan, Almaty-1 or the Dostyk station for onward distribution. The cargo is then released for customs clearance and moved to the warehouse by truck.
| Stage | Standard | What can go wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup and loading | 1–3 days | Factory not ready, wrong packaging |
| Export clearance | 1–2 days | Invoice does not match the goods |
| Train to the border | 3–6 days | Missed slot, waiting for the train |
| Bogie exchange | 1–3 days | Queue in peak season |
| Transit to the station | 4–7 days | Network congestion |
| Clearance and delivery | 1–3 days | Missing certificate, inspection |
The honest door-to-door figure is therefore from 18 days, factory to warehouse. Anything shorter is usually counted from the departure station and excludes two customs procedures and the last mile.
